Chapter 7: It Means Cleansing
The sound of my alarm clock vibrating on my dresser woke me. Even though I was awake, I still kept my eyes closed.
Just a little bit longer.
My plan to sleep came to no avail. I couldn’t escape the sound. The constant buzzing eventually infiltrated my mind and lingered, waiting for me to take action. I sat up and tapped the snooze button and closed my eyes again but it didn’t work. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t sink back into the depths of my subconscious. I didn’t want to start the day. It would be better if I just laid here. Maybe I should fake sick.
No…
I would need a doctor’s note for that to work so that wasn’t going to fly, and I couldn’t just skip school. It would just make things worse. Maybe I should just show up right before the bell instead of lounging around.
No…
I needed to switch out my books before the bell rang. Why should I care though? This was stupid. It was Tuesday. The world of high school moved so fast the CD was probably old news by now. I shouldn’t live my life in fear, and if anyone had something to say about it, I’d just show them who was boss.
With that notion I sprang out of bed and began to get dressed. It was a good thought to begin with, but the closer I got to being done, the more reality started to sink in. It hadn’t even been twenty-four hours yet. Of course they’d still remember. I’d be lying to myself to think otherwise. Sure, it would be nice to handle everyone who picked on me, but that would only cause more enemies. If anything I should go directly to the source, but getting involved with the three of them would only make the rumors true. I had no other options but to wait it out.
At school they showed no mercy. Virtually as soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted with insults. It was even worse than the first day. They taunted me wherever I went. It didn’t matter where I would go, they always found me. I was mad, but at the same time, I was determined not to let it get to me. If I showed them it didn’t faze me, they would move on.
People should have a heart. It made no sense to hurt another human being for personal gratification. It made me wonder how people lived with themselves. But then again they didn’t see it as wrong in the first place.
When I got home, I felt the same as I had the day before, so I headed straight for my room.
“Alex!” my mother called from the kitchen. “Come eat. You’re not going to have this luxury tomorrow. We have the mid-week service. So get it while it’s hot.”
I ignored her. I still wasn’t very hungry. For lunch I had eaten from the vending machine, again. Two bags of chips and a drink.
